I’m Janine Thomas, a self-confessed foodie.

 

Gastrotravelogue is about discovering the world one bite at a time, but it’s not just about food. It’s also about luxury living, culture, art and people. It’s not about seeing the world through rose-tinted glasses, but rather digging a bit deeper and finding a story to tell and always being honest in what I write.

It doesn’t matter who you are, or where it was, I am sure that you will all have a memorable food experience. It can be as simple as a picnic, or tapas and wine shared with friends or even blowing the budget on a Michelin starred meal. Food has a great way of uniting people.

It’s also about destination guides. Let’s face it, we all need some sound advice when we travel. Travel is a wonderful way of connecting the world and I hope that by reading my blog you will be inspired and find some new and interesting places and experiences to add to your bucket list.

 

My love of food began when……

My earliest food memories remain vividly in my mind. I was about 6 years old. I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, so spending time at the beach and out on the ocean was a way of life. Whenever the weather was good that’s where we were. Naturally, you have to eat! My father would go diving and emerge laden with crayfish (a bit like lobster). The fire was already prepared and the pot of sea water bubbling away. A little later we were eating the most delicious crayfish rolls topped with a dollop of mayonnaise. It was a simple meal, no side salads or extras and heaven with each bite!

Looking back, I realise that is where my love of food came from. I can still smell the ocean and remember the taste so well after all these years when I think about it.

Of course, there is a whole world to explore. I agonise for weeks before I go anywhere researching the best food experiences. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive either. I am just looking for a really authentic food and the best around.

I hope that my blog can inspire you to be a bit more daring and grow to love food the way I do when you travel to delicious destinations around the world.
