Dance Beach is a secluded beach down below the Monastery of Mary. It is among the oldest beaches in the area and many area residents go for a swim. Gradac Park is a lovely grassy area across from the Pile Gate where you can take in the view of the ocean.

Lovrijenac Fortress is one of the most impressive sights in Dubrovnik. The fortress is detached from the City Walls and perched on a bare rock overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Best Places to Stay Near Dubrovnik

If you want to escape the crowds, there are some amazing options just outside Dubrovnik. Cavtat, a short drive away, offers beautiful beaches and boutique hotels, giving you easy access to the city without staying in the hustle and bustle. It’s one of the best places to stay near Dubrovnik if you want a slower pace.

Gruž is another option. It is located on the water, with wonderful views of the old town and Lokrum Island. This is the main port where the cruise liners dock. It’s also just a few minutes away by bus or taxi. I walked to Gruž from Dubrovnik. It is about 3 km and the views along the coast are spectacular.

Is it better to stay inside Dubrovnik Old Town or outside the walls?

Staying inside the Old Town puts you right in the middle of the action — perfect for short stays and first-time visits where you want to walk everywhere. Staying just outside the walls, in areas like Pile, Ploče, or Lapad, is often better value, quieter at night, and easier if you’re carrying luggage or planning beach time. For most people, outside the walls wins unless location is your top priority.

Where is the best area to stay in Dubrovnik for families?

For families, the best area to stay in Dubrovnik is Lapad. It’s quieter than the Old Town, with plenty of parks, green spaces, and beaches like Uvala Lapad Beach. Many Dubrovnik hotels with pools and larger rooms are located here, offering family-friendly amenities. Lapad also has easy bus access to the Old Town, so you can still enjoy sightseeing without being in the busy city center.

Best Beaches Close to Dubrovnik

If you’re a beach lover, you’ll want to be close to some of Dubrovnik’s top beaches. Banje Beach is just a stone’s throw from the Old Town and is one of the most popular beaches in Dubrovnik. For something quieter, Sveti Jakov Beach is a local favorite that offers some of the best views of Dubrovnik from the shore.

What is the best part of Dubrovnik to stay in for nightlife?

If you’re visiting for nightlife, staying in Dubrovnik Old Town is the way to go. The area comes alive at night, with plenty of bars, restaurants, and clubs tucked within its medieval streets. Many boutique hotels in Dubrovnik are located close to popular nightlife spots, like Buža Bar and Skybar. Just be prepared for the lively atmosphere, as the Old Town can get crowded in the evenings.

Where can I find the best views of Dubrovnik?

For the best views of Dubrovnik, consider staying in the Ploče district, where many luxury hotels offer rooms with breathtaking panoramas of the Old Town and the Adriatic Sea. The Excelsior Hotel and Villa Dubrovnik are two highly recommended options with stunning views. If you prefer a quieter stay, some boutique hotels in Lapad also offer views of the sea and coastline.

What’s the best location to stay in Dubrovnik for beach access?

For beach lovers, Lapad is the best location to stay in Dubrovnik. You’ll be close to several beautiful beaches, including Uvala Lapad and Copacabana Beach. There are many Dubrovnik hotels with pools and direct beach access in this area, making it a fantastic option for sunbathers. Banje Beach, located just outside the Old Town in the Ploče area, is also a great spot for beach access and incredible views.

How far is Lapad from Dubrovnik Old Town?

Lapad is about 3-4 kilometers from Dubrovnik Old Town, and it’s easily accessible by bus or taxi. The bus ride takes around 10-15 minutes, making Lapad a convenient location if you want a quieter stay but still want to explore the Old Town’s attractions.

Are there any Dubrovnik Old Town hostels?

Yes, there are several hostels in Dubrovnik Old Town that offer budget-friendly accommodation. These hostels are a great option if you are travelling on a budget and want to save money while staying in the heart of the city. Popular hostels include Hostel Angelina and City Walls Hostel, both located within walking distance of the main landmarks.

What’s the best way to get around Dubrovnik?

Dubrovnik’s Old Town is pedestrian-only, so be prepared to walk, especially if you’re staying in one of the Dubrovnik Old Town hotels. If you’re staying in other parts of the city, the local bus system is reliable and connects most neighborhoods, including Lapad, Ploče, and the Gruž Port area. Taxis and Uber are also available, but they can be pricey during the high season.

What’s the best time of year to visit Dubrovnik?

The best time to visit Dubrovnik is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and fall (September to October). The weather is pleasant, the crowds are smaller, and hotels tend to be more affordable compared to the busy summer months. If you visit in the summer, make sure to book your accommodation early, as the best hotels in Dubrovnik tend to sell out quickly. I was there in May and while it was still a bit nippy in the evenings the days were beautiful.

What currency is used in Dubrovnik

The official currency of Croatia, including Dubrovnik, is the Croatian Kuna (HRK). However, as of January 2023, Croatia adopted the Euro (EUR), which is now widely used across the country.

  • 1 Euro is approximately 7.53 Croatian Kuna (though it’s best to check current conversion rates before you travel as they fluctuate).
  • ATMs are readily available in Dubrovnik, and most restaurants, hotels, and shops accept credit cards. If you plan to visit smaller, off-the-beaten-path spots, having some cash on hand is a good idea.

Pro Tip: It’s usually more affordable to withdraw cash from ATMs using your debit card than to exchange large sums at currency exchange offices, which can charge high fees.

Insider Tips

  • Booking Early is Key: Dubrovnik is a popular destination, and the best hotels in Dubrovnik Croatia fill up fast, especially during the summer. Book your accommodation in the Old Town or near the beaches as early as possible for the best choices.
  • Best Views: For the best views of Dubrovnik, consider booking a room in Ploče or Lapad. Hotels here often have rooftop terraces or rooms with balconies that offer stunning panoramas.

Dubrovnik is compact, but where you stay makes a big difference. Base yourself in or near the Old Town if you want to walk everywhere, choose Ploče for views and quieter nights, or head to Lapad if beaches and space matter more than being central. Pick the area that matches how you actually travel, and the rest of the trip falls into place.
