Where to Stay in Positano: Best Hotels, Views & Neighbourhoods

Where you stay in Positano matters more than it does in most small towns. A hotel near Spiaggia Grande puts the beach and ferry pier within easy reach; stay higher up and you’ll usually get better sea views, more space and a lot more stairs.

I stayed in Montepertuso on my last trip and spent plenty of time exploring Positano, including the beachfront, Fornillo and the streets above the centre. The best area depends on how long you’re staying, how much walking you want to do and what matters most — beach access, views, luxury, privacy or price.

Spiaggia Grande: Best for First-Time Visitors and Beach Access

Spiaggia Grande puts you close to the main beach, the ferry pier and the busiest part of Positano. Boat trips leave from here, the main shopping streets are nearby, and you can enjoy a short stay without spending half the day climbing between the beach and the upper roads.

The beachfront gets busy quickly once the ferries start arriving, so I’d look a few streets back if you want the location without being right in the middle of the daytime crowds. Hotels here are among the most expensive in Positano, especially when you add a full sea view.

Covo dei Saraceni

5★ Beachfront • Spiaggia Grande

You can’t get much closer to the water than Covo dei Saraceni. It is directly on Spiaggia Grande, with the ferry pier, boat trips and beachfront restaurants outside the door. Many rooms have balconies overlooking the harbour, while the rooftop pool gives you another reason to book here rather than simply choosing the location.

But the beachfront is busy during the day, so this is not the hotel I’d choose for a quiet stay.

Hotel Palazzo Murat

4★ Historic • Central Positano

Hotel Palazzo Murat gives you a central location without putting you directly on the busy beachfront. The former royal residence is set behind gardens and lemon trees, with a courtyard for breakfast and the beach, shops and restaurants a short walk away. It’s a strong option if you want to stay in the centre of Positano but don’t need a hotel right on the water.

But rooms facing the town can pick up some noise, so check the room location before booking.

Hotel Bougainville

3★ Great Value • Town Centre

Hotel Bougainville is one of my first picks for where to stay in Positano on a budget. You’re still within walking distance of the beach and ferry pier, so saving money doesn’t mean staying miles from the centre. Rooms are simple, with colourful tiled floors, but for Positano, the combination of price and location is hard to beat.

But rates are still high by normal standards — this is good value for Positano, not a genuinely cheap hotel.

Fornillo: Best for Beach Access Away from the Main Crowds

Fornillo is one of the best areas to look for Positano hotels with beach access away from Spiaggia Grande. It has its own beach and sits about a 10-minute walk from the centre along the coastal path, without ferries unloading day-trippers outside your hotel throughout the day.

Look for a hotel close to the coastal path; routes further inland can involve considerably more stairs.

Positano Art Hotel Pasitea

4★ Boutique • Fornillo

Positano Art Hotel Pasitea brings a more contemporary look to this side of town, with curved balconies, stone walls and colourful tiled floors. Many rooms open onto balconies facing the sea, and Fornillo Beach is within walking distance. It works particularly well if you want a boutique hotel in Positano without staying around the busiest part of Spiaggia Grande.

• Fornillo Beach is within walking distance
• Contemporary style with Amalfi Coast details

But the hotel is above the beach, so check the walking route and number of steps rather than assuming beach access means beachfront.

Upper Positano: Best for Sea Views and Better Value

Upper Positano is where I’d look for some of the best hotels in Positano with a view. The higher position offers wider panoramas over the rooftops and the sea, and hotel rates can be lower than around Spiaggia Grande.

The number of steps matters here more than the distance shown on a map. Check how close the hotel is to the main road or a bus stop, especially if you’re arriving with luggage or plan to go down to the beach every day.

Hotel Villa Gabrisa

4★ Boutique • Upper Positano

Hotel Villa Gabrisa occupies a former private villa above the centre, with sea-view balconies in most rooms. The interiors lean traditional rather than sleek, and there are only 12 rooms, which keeps it much smaller than Positano’s big-name hotels. It’s high enough for wide views across the coast but still within walking distance of the centre.

• Restaurant on site for evenings when you don’t want another climb

But the walk back from the centre is uphill, so this is easier if you don’t mind steps.

Villa Yiara

4★ Adults-Only • Upper Positano

Villa Yiara is a strong contender for the best hotel in Positano with a view if you don’t need five-star facilities. Every room opens onto a sea-view terrace, so you’re not relying on one of the top room categories to get the outlook. The all-white rooms are simple and filled with light, and breakfast is brought to your terrace in the morning.

But there’s no pool or full-service restaurant, so you are paying for the room, terrace and view rather than resort-style facilities

Hotel Reginella

3★ Classic • Upper Positano

Hotel Reginella is another good-value option in a town where prices climb quickly. Many rooms have balconies looking across Positano’s rooftops to the sea, and the hotel is close to shops and restaurants rather than isolated high on the hillside. The interiors are traditional and fairly simple, but you’re getting a central position and a view without paying five-star prices.

But there’s no pool, and the interiors are more traditional than stylish

Arienzo & Laurito: Best for Luxury Hotels and Private Beach Access

Arienzo and Laurito are where you’ll find some of the best luxury hotels in Positano, including properties with private beaches, hotel boats and shuttles into town. They are beyond the centre, so there’s more space and privacy than around Spiaggia Grande.

Getting into Positano usually means using the hotel shuttle, bus or taxi rather than walking. Here, I’d choose the hotel first and the exact location second — you’ll probably spend far more time at the property than you would with a central stay.

Hotel Le Agavi

5★ Luxury • Arienzo

A funicular runs through Hotel Le Agavi and down to its private beach, giving the hotel a setup you won’t find in central Positano. Every room faces the sea, and there’s a shuttle for trips into town. Among the top hotels in Positano, this is the one I’d choose if direct access to the water matters more than being able to walk everywhere.

• Shuttle service into Positano

But you’re outside the centre and will use the shuttle, bus or taxi when you want to go into town..

Il San Pietro di Positano

5★ Luxury • Laurito

Il San Pietro gives you very little reason to go into Positano. There’s a private beach, lunch down by the water and boats waiting to take you out along the coast. 5-star hotels in Positano don’t get much more self-contained than this.

• Michelin-starred restaurant on site

But if you want to walk out of your hotel and straight into the town, book somewhere else.

Montepertuso: Best for Views Above Positano

I stayed in Montepertuso on my last trip, and the view is the reason I’d stay up here again. Positano spreads out below, with the coastline beyond it, and you get a perspective you simply don’t have from the beach.

You are not popping back to your room between swims or boat trips, though. Montepertuso works best when you are happy to use the bus or taxi and return at the end of the day.

Antalia Boutique Hotel

5★ Boutique • Montepertuso

The view from Antalia Boutique Hotel stopped me every time I walked outside. Positano is below you, the coast stretches away in both directions, and even after a full day in town, I still wanted to stand there and look at it. This is where to stay in Positano with a view when you want to see the whole town rather than be in the middle of it.

• Wide views over Positano and the coast
• A small boutique stay away from the busiest streets
• First-hand recommendation from my own stay

But you need to be happy staying above Positano. I used the bus to go into town, and this isn’t a hotel I’d choose if I wanted to come and go from the beach several times a day.

How to Choose a Hotel in Positano

If you’re still deciding on dates as well as location, this guide to the best time to visit Positano is worth a quick read before booking.

• Check the exact room category: A hotel may have spectacular sea views, but that doesn’t mean every room does. Look at the wording carefully and check recent guest photos before paying extra.
• Look at road access: Some hotels can only be reached by steps. If you’re arriving with luggage, check the nearest drop-off point and whether porter service is available.
• Check what “beach access” actually means: It might be direct access, a lift or funicular, a long flight of steps, or simply a hotel within walking distance of the beach.
• If you’re driving, confirm parking before you book: Parking in Positano is limited and expensive, and many hotels don’t have space on site.

How to Get to Positano

Positano isn’t the easiest place to reach — and that’s part of what keeps it special. There’s no train station, so the final stretch is always by road or sea. Here’s how to get there without the stress.

• From Naples: Compare the train, ferry and transfer options.
• From Rome: Plan the fastest route south and the final leg to Positano.
• From Sorrento: See the bus, ferry and private transfer options.

Final thoughts

If I were booking Positano again, I’d start with location rather than star rating. Stay lower down for the beach and ferries, higher up for the views, or outside the centre when the hotel itself is the reason for the trip.

I stayed above town in Montepertuso and would happily do it again — but next time, I’d still be tempted by a few nights closer to the water.
