🌸 March to May – Spring

Spring is a fantastic time to explore Split without the heat or the crowds. March can be a bit unpredictable — you might get a sunny afternoon or a sudden rain shower — but April starts to feel properly Mediterranean. Wildflowers bloom on Marjan Hill, the city feels relaxed, and cafes begin to spill out onto cobbled streets.

By May, everything comes alive. The sea’s still a bit chilly for swimming, but you’ll see locals wading in. It’s warm enough for light dresses during the day and maybe a cardigan at night. Perfect weather for exploring the palace ruins, taking a ferry to Trogir, or doing a wine tasting without breaking a sweat.

My take? May was one of my favourite months to travel in Croatia overall — everything was open, the vibe was chilled, and you could enjoy a sunset spritz without elbowing past cruise ship crowds.

☀️ June to August – High Season & Beach Bliss

This is when Split shines — literally. Expect daily sunshine, temperatures in the high 20s to mid-30s°C (that’s 80s–90s°F), and an irresistible pull towards the Adriatic Sea. If swimming is top of your wishlist, this is your perfect time to visit Split.

The beaches — Bacvice, Kasjuni, and Trstenik — are buzzing, and ferries to islands like Hvar and Brac run frequently. Events light up the city, including the famous Ultra Europe music festival in July and Split’s Summer Festival, a celebration of theatre and open-air concerts.

But brace yourself for the crowds. Diocletian’s Palace can feel jam-packed by mid-morning, and it’s wise to book dinner reservations — especially at popular spots like Zinfandel or Villa Spiza.

My tip: If you’re here in July or August, get to the beach early (locals head there around 9am). And bring water shoes — the beaches are more pebbly than sandy, and your feet will thank you.

🍇 September to October – The Local Favourite

If I had to pick the perfect time to visit Split, it would be September. The sea is still warm from summer’s heat, the sun sets a little earlier but in glorious golden tones, and the city starts to breathe again after the peak season.

October is quieter still. The air turns crisp in the mornings and evenings, but the days often remain sunny and clear. It’s also harvest season — think juicy figs, fresh olive oil, and local wine tastings in nearby villages.

Fewer cruise ships dock, meaning you can wander through the palace without being part of a tour group conga line. This is also important if you plan to visit Dubrovnik. Prices drop a little, restaurants feel more relaxed, and the city’s rhythm slows to something more authentic.

Personal insight: I found Split especially charming in the shoulder season. It was easier to connect with locals, and I didn’t feel rushed. You can still enjoy a swim in the sea, but also comfortably hike up Marjan Hill without melting!

🌧️ November to February – Off-Season Quiet+

If you’re looking for winter sun, this isn’t it — but if you want a peaceful city break with a strong local flavour, Split in the off-season can be surprisingly rewarding. Expect daytime temperatures between 8°C and 15°C (46–59°F), with a mix of crisp days and rainy spells.

This is when the city returns to its residents. The Riva (Split’s palm-lined promenade) is still lively with locals sipping coffee, and you can duck into wine bars or museums without a single queue.

December brings a festive touch with the Advent Market in the old town — think mulled wine, live music, and cozy stalls selling everything from crafts to čevapi. Many restaurants close for winter, but the good ones that stay open feel even more special.

If you’re someone who enjoys off-beat trips, this is the time to embrace Split’s quieter side — and you’ll find amazing deals on hotels too.

Split is one of those places that changes with the seasons, and that’s exactly what makes it so special. You might be hopping on a ferry to Hvar under the summer sun or exploring Diocletian’s cellars in the quiet of December. It always has something to offer. Personally? I think late spring or early autumn is the sweet spot – warm days, fewer crowds, and that laid-back Mediterranean charm in full swing.
