Boutique Hotels in Amalfi: Small, Stylish Places to Stay

Amalfi doesn’t have many true boutique hotels, which makes choosing the right one more important. This guide focuses on small hotels — places that feel personal, are sensibly located, and are comfortable for a few days on the coast.

You’ll find a short Hot List first, followed by a breakdown of the best areas to stay and the full hotel selections. Use it to compare options quickly and choose a hotel that fits your pace and priorities.

Amalfi works well as a practical base on the coast, and this wider guide to Amalfi Coast boutique hotels helps put it in context alongside other towns.

The Hot List

Short on time? These are the boutique stays I’d book first.

Hotel Santa Caterina

Best for classic sea views
Just outside the centre of Amalfi, this historic hotel feels calm and contained despite its scale. Rooms are comfortable and well finished, the setting is dramatic, and access into town is straightforward on foot. If you want wide sea views and full facilities without being cut off from Amalfi, this is a strong choice.

Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi

Best for quiet stays
Above Amalfi in a converted convent, this hotel is much quieter than places closer to the port. The views are wide and uninterrupted, and evenings are calm once the day-trippers have gone. If you want a quieter base with a bit of distance from the crowds, this works well.

Albergo Marina Riviera

Best for staying central
Right on the waterfront, Marina Riviera puts you close to ferries, beaches, and restaurants. It’s smaller and more personal than many nearby hotels, with practical rooms and an easy, walk-everywhere location. If you want to be right in the middle of Amalfi without booking a large hotel, this is an easy choice.

Quick Logistics

  • Best areas to stay – Amalfi town works well if you want easy ferry access, restaurants on your doorstep, and minimal planning each day. Hotels just above the centre are quieter in the evenings but involve some uphill walking. Staying right by the port is busiest during the day and calmer once ferries stop running.
  • When to book – Smaller boutique hotels sell out early, especially sea-view rooms between May and September. If you’re travelling in high season, it’s worth booking as soon as dates are firm.
  • Getting there from the airportNaples Airport is the main arrival point. Private transfers are the simplest option door to door, while ferries from Naples or Salerno are a good alternative if timings line up.
  • Getting around – Amalfi is compact and walkable, but expect stairs and slopes. Ferries are the easiest way to move along the coast, especially in summer. Buses are useful but can be crowded at peak times.
  • Worth knowing – Day-trippers arrive mid-morning and leave late afternoon. Early mornings and evenings are when Amalfi feels calmer and more local, especially around the port and main square.

How I Chose These Boutique Hotels

  • All the hotels listed are small enough to feel personal, rather than large or anonymous.
  • Location mattered more than facilities — places that make getting around Amalfi easier day to day.
  • Rooms needed to be comfortable and quiet enough to rest properly after busy sightseeing days.
  • Comfort basics had to be consistent, not just impressive in photos.
  • Value was judged by overall experience and ease of stay, not by star rating or price point.

Best Areas to Stay in Amalfi

Amalfi town centre
Staying in the centre puts ferries, beaches, shops, and restaurants within easy walking distance. It’s the easiest base if you want to move around the coast without overthinking transport or timings.
Worth knowing: It’s busiest late morning to mid-afternoon when ferries arrive, but evenings are much calmer.

Above Amalfi (upper town / hillside hotels)
Hotels slightly above the centre are quieter and feel more removed from the daily ferry traffic. Views tend to open out across the coast, and evenings are noticeably calmer.
Worth knowing:The walk back from the centre involves stairs and slopes, especially at night.

Waterfront / port area
This area works well if ferries and boat trips are a big part of your plans. Beaches and transport are close by, and arrivals and departures are straightforward.
Worth knowing: Expect more noise during the day while ferries are running.

Atrani (short walk from Amalfi)
Just a few minutes away on foot, Atrani feels smaller and more residential while still being close to Amalfi’s transport links. It’s a good option if you want quieter evenings without moving far away.
Worth knowing: Hotel choice is limited, so rooms book up quickly.

FAQs: Boutique Hotels in Amalfi

What counts as a boutique hotel in Amalfi?
In Amalfi, boutique hotels are typically smaller properties with a limited number of rooms, a personal feel, and a clear sense of place. Many are family-run or locally owned, with more character than larger chain hotels.

Are boutique hotels in Amalfi usually in the town centre?
Some are, but many boutique hotels sit slightly above the centre or just outside the busiest areas. This often means quieter evenings and better views, with a short walk back into town.

Is it better to stay above Amalfi or near the port?
Staying near the port is most convenient for ferries and short stays, but it’s also the busiest area during the day. Hotels above Amalfi tend to be quieter, though they usually involve stairs or uphill walks.

Do boutique hotels in Amalfi book up quickly?
Yes. Amalfi has a limited number of small hotels, and the most popular rooms — especially those with sea views — often sell out well in advance during peak season.

Are boutique-style B&Bs a good alternative to hotels in Amalfi?
They can be. Many B&Bs in Amalfi offer the same small scale and personal feel as boutique hotels, but with fewer facilities. They’re a good option if you value atmosphere and location over on-site services.

Is Amalfi a good base for exploring the Amalfi Coast?
Amalfi works well as a base if you plan to use ferries to visit other towns along the coast. It’s centrally located and easy to get around from, especially in the warmer months.

How walkable is Amalfi if you stay in a boutique hotel?
Amalfi itself is compact, but many boutique hotels involve stairs, slopes, or short uphill walks. It’s worth checking elevation and access if mobility or late nights are a concern.

With limited hotel choice and high seasonal demand, Amalfi isn’t a place to leave accommodation decisions until the last minute. Focusing on location and layout early helps keep the rest of the trip straightforward.
