Where to stay in Singapore

Although Singapore is a small country it has a diversity of cultures that can be seen in the food throughout the city as well. Each area in the city can be thought of as a unique enclave with its individual identity.

Little India: For the Adventurous Foodies

On my last visit to Singapore, I recently spent a day exploring Little India. I love the energy and vibrant colours of the area. The colorful streets, aromatic spices, and vibrant markets transported me back to my trip to India

This area is a fantastic choice for those looking to experience a different side of Singapore. Wander through the bustling Tekka Centre, where you can find a variety of Indian dishes, fresh produce, and vibrant textiles. Don’t miss the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, one of the oldest Hindu temples in Singapore.

Singapore is an expensive destination and I think this part of town delivers some of the best value for money. Little India is known for its affordable accommodation options, making it a great spot especially if you are on a tight budget, but it doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style.

Don’t expect the pristine façade of modern Singapore. It’s a part of town that’s a little grubby by comparison, but don’t let that put you off. That’s part of its charm. The rows of old shophouses have been restored and painted in a uniquely Indian style. It is an older part of town with a lot of history.

Pros:

  • Unique cultural experience.
  • Delicious and diverse food options.
  • Budget-friendly accommodation.

Cons:

  • Can be chaotic and noisy.
  • Not as centrally located.

Vibe: Colorful and bustling, a treat for the senses.

Best for: Food adventurers, budget travelers, and culture seekers.

Chinatown: Vibrant Heritage

As the name implies this is where the original Chinese immigrants settled. Chinatown is a treasure trove of cultural and historical experiences. Wander through its bustling streets, and you’ll find a captivating mix of old and new. Traditional shophouses stand alongside trendy cafes and bars, creating a unique blend of the past and present. You can also find good value-for-money accommodation in this area and some of the best food vendors in the city are found here.

The market is filled with the usual items you find around the world and much of it is cheap and plastic but there are loads of touristy things to buy as well. As you explore you will find interesting street art next to shops selling traditional medicines. I also saw vendors selling dried food supplies and odd things in jars that reminded me of those I had seen in Hong Kong.

There is a good mix of luxury hotels and relatively cheap rooms for budget travellers. It is a short walk to Clarke Quay and the central business district.

Pros:

  • Rich cultural experiences.
  • Affordable accommodation options.
  • Great food scene with many hawker stalls.

Cons:

  • Can be noisy.
  • Crowded during peak hours.

Vibe: Traditional and lively, full of character and history.

Best for: Culture buffs, history enthusiasts, and budget travelers.

🤩 Top Tip for Foodies: One of the best meals around visit Liao Fan Hawker Chan and try his signature dish, Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice or Noodle. at a bargain-basement price of less than US 3.00 it is one of the cheapest Michelin-starred meals you will ever eat.

Clarke Quay: For the Night Owls

Clarke Quay is the heartbeat of Singapore’s nightlife. I think that this is the best area to stay in Singapore. Lining the Singapore River, it is packed with bars, clubs, and riverside restaurants. If you’re looking to dance the night away or enjoy a cocktail by the water, Clarke Quay is the place to be .

I love strolling along the banks of the river, especially at night, when the area comes alive. There are loads of restaurants and pubs and trendy hotels on both sides of the river. It is centrally positioned and access to almost everywhere is relatively easy.

Roberston Quay is a short walk away, a bit further along the river and more laid back. I have often seen locals out running or cycling along the banks of the river, although how they manage it in the heat beats me!

Pros:

  • Vibrant nightlife.
  • Scenic riverside views.
  • Plenty of dining options.

Cons:

  • Noisy at night.
  • Accommodation can be pricey.

Vibe: Energetic and fun, ideal for party-goers.

Best for: Nightlife lovers, young travellers, and those who enjoy dining out.

Bugis and Kampong Glam

This is another part of the city that I love spending time exploring. It is often also referred to as the Arab Street or Haji Lane area.

For a more cultural experience, consider the Bugis and Kampong Glam districts, which offer a mix of heritage and contemporary comforts. These areas are among the best areas to stay in Singapore for those who want to immerse themselves in local culture while enjoying top-notch accommodations.

Parts of it feel like the souks in Dubai with the bazaars and markets scattered throughout the area. It has a Middle Eastern feel with delicious food and people lazing around smoking a hookah. I came across shops selling beautiful lanterns like the ones I saw in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, exotic Persian-styled rugs and some awesome silk scarves. There were also interesting boutiques selling fun alternate items. The area is also famous for its street art.

Budget travellers can find good deals, but there are also boutique hotels that offer a more luxurious stay.

It’s the perfect area of Singapore to stay if you like history, art, and a laid-back vibe.

Pros:

  • Rich in heritage and culture.
  • Trendy cafes and boutique shops.
  • Artistic and photogenic spots.

Cons:

  • Limited big hotel chains.
  • Can be quieter at night compared to other areas.

Vibe: Bohemian and historic, ideal for those looking to explore a more artistic and culturally rich side of Singapore.
